Mrs Hoenshell Science 2017

Orange Grove Middle School

WEEK of OCTOBER 16-20

October11

ANNOUNCEMENTS:     Quarter 2 starts!

Science Fair (SARSEF): Please sign up to participate in SARSEF this week. Starts Tuesday, October 17 Room 506

Community Schools SARSEF Registration

Tutoring: Please come in Wednesday mornings, Room 506, to submit any changes for your science work. This will be the last time for one-on-one help before grades are posted.

Homework:  Students will have a homework challenge scenario each week to help them understand how the learning goal for that week is tied to a real-world application or event.

Weekly Content:

7th Grade: We will be starting the rock cycle and learning how minerals together create different types of rocks. Students will also learn about how different processes and locations create different types of rocks.

8th Grade: We will continue learning about chemistry. Students will begin their content topic for periodic table and how different elements are more apt to bond with certain elements more than other elements.

WEEK of SEPTEMBER 11-15

September11

This week both the 7th and 8th grade students will focus on CER (Claim, evidence, reasoning). Students will learn about the difference between observation and inference.

7th Grade: Students will finish their water filtration systems and practice summarizing their results based on quantitative data and qualitative data they collected. Later this week, they will begin their geology/earth science unit.

8th Grade: Students will finish their balloon car challenge and practice summarizing their results based on quantitative data and some qualitative data. Students will then begin the unit on chemistry starting with matter.

WEEK of SEPTEMBER 5-8

September5

This week students will begin to learn about the engineering process and investigate how changing one variable may or may not change the outcome for their prototype.

7th Grade: Will focus on water filtration by building a water filtration system. Last week we discussed the affects that Hurricane Harvey will have on the water system in Texas and Louisiana. The water filtration activity is based on NASA’s lesson plan to teach students the importance of water resources.

8th Grade: Students will focus on matter by building balloon cars. Students related the change in pressure within a balloon to that of the pressure that created Hurricane Harvey. Students will compare the force and velocity of their balloon cars to the force and velocity of Hurricane Harvey.

Monday, September 4, 2017 NO SCHOOL! Labor Day Holiday.

Weekly Activities:

7th and 8th Grade: Students will continue to practice student safety and use their learned skills using the steps to the scientific method. Later this week, we will begin to learn the steps to the engineering process so that students can compare the differences between the two processes.

WEEK of AUGUST 21-25

August21

Announcements:

Monday, August 21–Eclipse (Only students who returned their permission slips on Friday may participate).

Thursday, August 31–Open House

Weekly Activity:

7th Grade and 8th Grade will continue to review the student safety procedures and begin to focus on developing their own investigations based on testable hypothesis. Students will begin to understand variables and how to determine which variable is being tested and which changes because of what is being tested. With lab partner, students will develop their own investigations by changing one variable and predict what will happen because of changing that one variable.

Summary of Weekly Activities

7th and 8th Grade students will continue learning about the expectations for the science classroom. We will start the week with a team-building activity were students will evaluate the skills needed for an effective team. The students will continue to discuss systems thinking especially the concept of interdependence and how vital it is for students to have effective communication skills within a science classroom.

Students will learn about lab safety and the expectations for lab safety and complete their first lab.

Student Safety Contract

Students must review with their guardian and sign and return the Student Safety Contract before they can participate in any labs or engineering projects. This insures and maximizes the safety in the classroom during these high energy activities.
