WEEK of OCTOBER 23-27

October25

ANNOUNCEMENTS:

Tutoring: Please come in Wednesday mornings, Room 506, to submit any changes for your science work. This will be the last time for one-on-one help before grades are posted.

Homework:  Students will have a homework challenge scenario every other week to help them understand how the learning goal for that week is tied to a real-world application or event. The scenario will be in Google Classroom.

Weekly Content:

7th Grade: We will be focusing on collecting data based on qualitative observations for different types of rocks and minerals. Students will also learn about how different processes and locations create different types of rocks.

8th Grade: We will continue learning about chemistry. Students will complete a lab using spectra tubes for various elements. This lab will require a high level of student safety.

WEEK of SEPTEMBER 11-15

September11

This week both the 7th and 8th grade students will focus on CER (Claim, evidence, reasoning). Students will learn about the difference between observation and inference.

7th Grade: Students will finish their water filtration systems and practice summarizing their results based on quantitative data and qualitative data they collected. Later this week, they will begin their geology/earth science unit.

8th Grade: Students will finish their balloon car challenge and practice summarizing their results based on quantitative data and some qualitative data. Students will then begin the unit on chemistry starting with matter.

WEEK of SEPTEMBER 5-8

September5

This week students will begin to learn about the engineering process and investigate how changing one variable may or may not change the outcome for their prototype.

7th Grade: Will focus on water filtration by building a water filtration system. Last week we discussed the affects that Hurricane Harvey will have on the water system in Texas and Louisiana. The water filtration activity is based on NASA’s lesson plan to teach students the importance of water resources.

8th Grade: Students will focus on matter by building balloon cars. Students related the change in pressure within a balloon to that of the pressure that created Hurricane Harvey. Students will compare the force and velocity of their balloon cars to the force and velocity of Hurricane Harvey.
